About Cataract Surgery

What is Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is a safe and effective procedure to remove the clouded natural lens of your eye and replace it with a clear artificial lens (IOL - Intraocular Lens).

At Vivekanand Eye Hospital, we use advanced Phacoemulsification (Phaco) technology - a modern, bladeless technique that uses ultrasound waves to break up and remove the cataract through a tiny incision.

Did you know? Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed and successful surgeries worldwide, with over 95% success rate.
Why Choose Phaco Surgery?
  • Micro-incision (2.2-2.8mm) - No stitches required
  • Faster recovery and healing
  • Minimal discomfort during and after surgery
  • Same-day discharge
  • Better visual outcomes
  • Lower risk of complications

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common queries about cataract surgery

No, cataract surgery is not painful. We use local or topical anesthesia to numb your eye completely. You may feel slight pressure during the procedure, but no pain. Most patients report minimal discomfort during and after surgery.

The actual phaco surgery takes only 15-20 minutes per eye. However, you should plan to spend 2-3 hours at the hospital for pre-operative preparation, surgery, and initial post-operative observation before discharge.

Most patients can resume light activities within 24-48 hours. Here's a general timeline:

  • Day 1-2: Rest at home, avoid rubbing eyes
  • Week 1: Light activities, avoid heavy lifting and bending
  • Week 2-4: Gradual return to normal activities
  • After 4 weeks: Full recovery, all activities permitted

It depends on the type of IOL you choose. With standard monofocal lenses, you may need reading glasses. However, with premium multifocal or extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses, most patients can significantly reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses for most activities.

No, cataracts cannot come back once removed. However, some patients may develop a condition called "posterior capsule opacification" (PCO) or "secondary cataract" months or years after surgery. This causes clouding of the lens capsule that holds the IOL.

PCO can be easily treated with a quick, painless laser procedure called YAG laser capsulotomy, which takes only a few minutes and provides immediate improvement in vision.

Cataract surgery has an excellent success rate of over 95-98%. At Vivekanand Eye Hospital, Dr. Chetan Kharkande has performed thousands of successful cataract surgeries with a 98% success rate. Complications are rare and most patients experience significant improvement in vision and quality of life.
